JuNouCast # 12 - Kosmische Maneuvers in the Dark by Zambon

kosmische/ modern psychedelia / cosmic / krautrock

I’ve been thinking about doing kosmische musik mixtape for quie a long time. At first this JuNouCast was supposed to be a mix of my fav krautrock joints, but after my first take I decided that this would be too hard to absorb… (I still got it on my hdd, maybe one day I’ll publish it online, 140 minutes of high flyin’ journey). I chose to widen the formula and apart from kraut rock I mixed some music that was inspired by the german take on progressive rock or had this space’ish feeling. So you can finde here some krautrock tracks like Kraftwerk’s “Ruckzuck” or Harmonia 76’s “Luneburg Heath” sitting just next to modern psychodelic music from Studio and A Mountain Of One, some excellent space disco from The Emperor Machine, Lindstrom and Prince Thomas, some space magical space sounds from Soft Rocks or Charisma’s dusty cosmic pop. This podcast isn’t a mix and you should really listen it at one take. Only then you will feel this kosmischen aura…

Harmonia 76 - Luneburgh Heat

Holger Czukay, Jah Wobble, Jaki Liebzeit - Mystery R.P.S (no.8)

Black Devil Disco Club (Brain Machine’s Lucifer Rising Dub)

The Emperor Machine - Not None

Kraftwerk - Ruckzuck

Lindstrom & Prins Thomas - Cisco

Studio - Lifes A Beach

Invisible Conga People - Cable Dazed

Chrisma - I Dig You

A Mountain Of One - Who By The Fire

Soft Rocks - Black Magic

Sylvester - I Need Somebody To Love

Podcast #9: Reza

REZA
(Soul Initiation / BIOS / Bassdrive)

Welcome to the 9th edition of Junoucast! This time we stray from sounds we use to present here and turn towards broadly understood drum’n’bass style.

The style arised not further than 15 years ago as a mixture of breakbeat, funk, hip-hop and reggae basslines. It gave freedom of blending different styles of music to the artists. It was said to be just a temporary trend, while eventually it established its position on dance music scene moving masses with 170bpms until this day.

Drum’n’bass presented in today’s Junoucast has been mixed by Reza - the founder of Soul Initiation DJ&Promotion collective. He is actively collaborating with Bios Recordings and has its own radio show in the biggest d’n’b radio in the world - Bassdrive (every thursday from 4pm to 6pm).

In this mix its author presents what he like the most in d’n’b - depth, experiment, and darkness, based on ascetic percussions, heavy subbasses and beatiful backgrounds. Starting from number one in the mix (disturbing stepper from Alix Perez studio), through fresh productions from young artists, along with veterans as ASC, reaching the end with a track by polish producer Mortem, we can easly perceive that Detroit, minimal techno and dubstep inspire the artists lately. Drum’n’bass is not sounding as drum’n’bass. Half tempo and atmosphere is dominating. But let’s overpass the definitions, as expression and emotions are what is important here. It is surely not a mix for sunny morning. Whereas it is perfect for lonesome meditations or excurions on cloudy days. First class selection and remarkable mixing technique makes this Junoucast worth frequent listening.

Alix Perez - Portraits Of The Unknown (Interlude)

The perspectives of cybernetics, ideology crisises, twelve tone music or electronic music” - this sentence from almost fifty years ago (sampled from the movie “Innocent Sorcerers” ) today sounds almost prophetic. The first decade of the 21st century passes in the mood of technological freedom and stylist chaos. Thanx to the Internet brand new music becomes instantly available all over the world; at the same time other media keeps blockin’ customers’ conciousness by promoting a vast group of artists, who are most likely to sell large quantities of their product. Meanwhile, the underground is boiling with fresh ideas and experiments with limitless cross-genre fusions, which main goal is to create progress in the game. There’s no shame in taking inspirations from the past, as long as you place them in contemporary context, instead of just copying the original ideas and calling it retro. Syntetic sound of the 80’s recently smoothly made it’s way into California soul; the first part of my podcast is a living proof, that the new crossover sound is indeed very dope. A perfect harmony between synth chords, funky live bass licks, boom-clap beats on the one and most importantly, deep black vocals, that’s what I dare to call CyberSoul. This name first dawned to me while listening to L.A.’s power duo J’Davey. Their brand new track’s snippet in the mix is a smash hit, that confirms their right to call themselves “black Eurythmics”. But before that there’s six tracks, that strangely came together around the unforgettable old-school beat of Prince’s “When Doves Cry”. You can tell that especially Yahzarah’s and Dam Funk’s tunes owe him quite a lot. The opening tracks from Dimitri Ustinov & Aqeel set a very high standard for the mix, that was meant to be radical, fresh and at danceable at the same time. I could not do this without Janelle Monae from Wondaland, but also, in a somehow strange chain of events, none other than Radiohead. In a typical freestyle manner, the second part of the podcast drifts from New Zealand tech soul to cosmic hip hop and abstract beats, that will kill you with phat and spacey sound. We close the bill with the aces like Flying Lotus, Black Milk (deconstructing the loop from… yes, you guessed it, “When Doves Cry”), the mighty Sa-Ra and her highness, Erykah Badu. Chocolate Moose Cyber Soul is my quest into the future, which, as always, is now.

JuNouCast #5 was a very spontaneous creation. I used some perfectly round shaped, negro and exactly 12’ inch girls, which I retrieved especially for this occasion from my harem of 12’ inch girls. Most of the tracks in this mix are my tribute to old school dance music (which is very important for me), hip-hop and electro classics like 1986’s Whodini “Funky Beat”, Jonzun Crew “Packjam” from 1982 and much younger Anthony Rother’s “Compression” or totally fat beat - “Love Me Or Hate Me” by Lady Sov. I couldn’t forget about UK Garage classic “See line woman” (DEM2 Remix) - 10 years in my dj crate! The rest of the selection is a coctail of various styles playing in my head, I hope they complete the eclectic whole of the mix!

Whodini “Funky beat”

Mr. Scruff “UG”

Krazy Baldhead “Applejuice”

Milez Benjiman “Chop that wood”

Main inspiration for the mix was raging scene of new beats, glitch hop or however you like to call it. Also it was supposed to be heavy. So we have stars like Flying Lotus, Harmonic 313 or Dabrye. Suprisingly easily into the tracklist blend players from quite different genre, French butchers Mr. Oizo and SebastiAn. With two tracks appears one of my favorite producers of last months, Japan’s very own, merciless Riow Arai. The mix wouldn’t be complete without one of ma fav intrumental hip-hop tracks of all time - Sixtoo’s “Boxcuter Emporium pt. 2.” The Glitch Mob ends it with a banger that won’t let you sit still. If you sit while listening to it there’s nothing I can tell you.

When recording this podcast I was inspired by ‘Raptime’ series by Druh Sławek. It’s an hour of less-known american rap from 1994-97. Ain’t a classic dj mix, I was more about presenting songs in their original form. Hope you gonna have fun. Don’t forget to smoke some reefer when listening!
